269: Giving Back Insights #98 — Catching up with Carol Newton – the three R’s with Rob Lowe

A real labor of love that makes a difference to over 3,000 kids every year.

Welcome to the 98th episode of Giving Back Insights, my Thursday solo show where I talk about how our guests and their charities serve others, to explore actions each of can take to make a difference in people’s lives and to share. Today I’m discussing Catching up with Carol Newton – the three R’s. Listen to today’s episode and don’t forget to give your feedback and valuable comment. Enjoy!

Key Takeaways:

Carol Newton from www.BrightSmiles.org and her husband Lee grace today’s cover, taking a break from a great couples activity, riding their Harleys.  A wonderful aspect of Carol’s personality is that she is deeply appreciative of what she has, starting right at home.  The work she does helping kids stay healthy is incredibly important to her, a real labor of love that makes a difference to over 3,000 kids every year.  And almost every time we chat, Carol talks about her hard-working fella, and how it’s only been possible with Lee’s morale and financial support.

I find her outlook refreshing, and a powerful reminder of the power of one.  That one person who believes in you and joins your movement. It’s just as important as remembering to focus on helping one person at a time.  Otherwise it’s just too easy to be overwhelmed.

In addition to Lee, Carol has a number of supporters who contribute in their own way to make Bright Smiles work.  Seal-A-Smile has been their largest grant donor for the past 8 years. Dr. Rena Christman sees kids who have Badger Care or no dental coverage at all. Steve Olson with Gilberts Dodge of Sand Creek donated a van to keep them on the move.  In addition to the tireless efforts of uber volunteers Jean and Leah over the years, Harlie has joined the home team and added her digital expertise.

Foundation:

What do you do?  Deliver health to elementary school kids who wouldn’t normally receive it

How do you do it?  Provide oral hygiene at schools in Wisconsin to all kids regardless of their ability to pay

What do you need?  Sustainable revenue streams to grow her services

Message & Storytelling:

Clear: paint the picture of the battle

Concise: what’s the problem

Compelling: impact on 1 person

Partnerships: think of affiliating with Bright Smiles like a product or service

What’s the value to them?  Put yourself in their shoes, what do they need and want, and how do you fit into that picture?  Hint: it’s not just about good PR or feeling good.

What’s the program?  Sponsorship

Outreach channels

Path to sustainability:

Raise Awareness: of the whole issue AND how you fit

Raise Engagement: engage your crew, all the stakeholders.  Get their input and find out where they are most interested in pitching in, including activities in their wheelhouse.

Raise the Roof!: celebrate.  Think “FUN”raising instead of FUNDraising

Remember: Always err on the side of love & kindness.

Love & Gratitude,

Rob
